陕西榆林-内蒙古伊金霍洛旗-山西右玉县:

Reared in Shaanxi, I’ve never realized that the province boasts a huge lake. Advertised as Shannxi’s sea, Hongjiannao which straddles the common borders of Shaanxi’s Shenmu and Inner Mongolia’s Yijinhuoluo Qi, 110km north of Yulin at an altitude of 1100-1200m, used to span an area of 67sqkm, and though having dwindled to 33sqkm, it’s still the country’s largest desert lake. Now in front of us is a weeny section of the triangle-shaped lake fed by 7 seasonal rivulets, which has been cordoned off for kids’ fun. There’s an air of excitement about it. Yunduo’er joins the boisterous young crowd in the water, with that vast expanse merging with distant horizons and shimmering with flecks of the morning light. A boat ride is a way to be at one with the lake, but that long queue instantly puts us off and we have to give it a miss.

长在陕西，竟不知陕西亦有大湖。自陕西榆林北行110公里到达被誉为“陕西的海”的红碱淖。大湖位于陕西神木市和内蒙古伊金霍洛旗交界处，海拔1100-1200米。最早湖面67平方公里，虽后缩至33平方公里，但红碱淖仍是中国最大的沙漠湖泊。由7条季节性河流汇注而成的三角形红碱淖，其一小块儿圈出来供小朋友玩耍。那汪水扯地连天，在上午的阳光中星星点点，衬托着云朵儿和小朋友们的叽叽喳喳。坐船可以深入湖区，但看见那儿排大队，还是算了吧，不坐船了。

On the other side of Hongjiannao is Inner Mongolia whose Bayinchanghuge Grassland, Yijinhuoluo Qi adds extra luster to Yunduo’er’s day. Wooden walkways lead into the interior of the sun-splashed meadows, with white and chestnut horses contentedly grazing around, all under Inner Mongolia’s signature azure sky where white cumulus clouds are spilled out all over. But we don’t have time for an overnight stay at one of the masonry Mongolian “tents” fronting onto the prairie.

红碱淖的另一边就是内蒙古了。伊金霍洛旗巴音昌呼格草原又为云朵儿的一天增添新的色彩。内蒙古那特有的蓝天上云卷云舒，下面的木栈道通向阳光溅落的绿茵，白色栗色马悠闲地吃草。有砖石蒙古“帐篷”紧挨草原，可我们没时间住一晚了。

Jungar Yellow River Grand Bridge on the 1770km G18 Rongwu Highway, an artery that runs from Rongcheng, Shandong in the east to Wuhai, Inner Mongolia in the west flies us over a deep canyon the bottom of which is still being chiseled by the nation’s Mother River, beyond which is Shanxi province. A small mountain road leads us into Youyu, a small county close to the provincial border, our pit stop for the night. We bolt down our dinner, patchy neon lights and the dim glow from neatly spaced street lamps rushing headlong to doggedly pierce the darkness of Youyu’s night. Alas, we have to do without Shanxi noodles stretched by hands - the eatery owner says they don’t make the type anymore.

G18荣乌高速自东部山东荣成至西部内蒙古乌海，全长1770公里。途中靠准噶尔黄河大桥飞跃中华母亲河仍在雕琢着的峡谷。接着便进入了山西省，循山路至今日歇脚地、靠近省界的右玉县。右玉霓虹灯光虽零星，排列整齐的街灯光虽暗淡，但仍奋不顾身一头扎进那夜色中，切割着那黑暗。我们匆匆吃了晚饭。没想到餐馆儿老板竟然说现在大家都不做山西拉面了。想吃山西拉面，但在山西吃不到嘴。
